Species sightings reports

Our Plans

Currently the site is very much in the 'come on in' mode, we want to get as many gardens as possible signed up and once we have reached a good number the site should move into a more reporting mode, shouting about the findings of data analysis and rich in reports. There is a further phase of development we are hoping to embark upon and that is the action mode - identifying real world actions that will help improve biodiversity in our gardens and local areas.

Through the sustained development of the site we aim to build a geographically based data system where communities can access and add to information about the ecology of their area and highlight opportunities for subsistence horticulture and wildlife conservation. We hope the user-ship will also get involved in developing the site and their gardens and blocks of gardens.

Features currently under development include:

  • user dashboards - gather the reports you want onto a dashboard (e.g. Bird Sightings in OX4 or Stag Beetle sightings in South East England)
  • multiple editor options, so people can collectively add to garden sightings
  • photo tagging for species
  • friends of species; ie thyme is friends with honey bee and 35 others
  • correlation seeker: choose two trends and compare for correlations
  • JOBS page, advertising positions within ecocentrus, or specific tasks
  • search options on species list
  • Sightings reporting re-coded and include secondary sightings (non-owned gardens)
  • Sightings reports reworked to include Google Charts (graphs etc)
  • Local Area page to include map of gardens
  • Tip of the day - auto tweeting and showing on the site - generic tips to encourage biodiversity

Future developments will include:

  • Android and iPhone app to facilitate sightings reports (works with camera and geotagging) and provide alerts based on your preferences (e.g. new species sighted in your neighbourhood, submission of sightings in your garden for your approval, species alerts for species you follow)
  • Facebook app to integrate your Facebook friends into the project and find their neighbours on Facebook
